We spoke to Vivian Stauffer, Hamilton International CEO, and Omar Bouali, Ubisoft Game Content director, about the timepiece partnership - and the watch that helps you survive.

A Piece of Yara’s History

Hamilton watches have appeared in more than 500 movies and TV shows since 1932, including Interstellar and Tenet. The Cuban-inspired, fictional Caribbean island which plays the setting for Far Cry 6®. Yara is what the guerillas are fighting to free, and what Antón Castillo is fighting to keep a hold of. The island is home to several distinct regions, each with their own narratives and storylines.

The Resolver Mentality

Literally translated from Spanish, the word “resolver” means “to solve”. But in Cuba, the word means so much more. Due to trade embargoes which meant that importing items has been historically challenging, the people of Cuba have often been forced to make the most out of what resources they have. The “resolver mentality” encompasses the resourcefulness, improvisation and resilience that’s needed to get by. If you can’t make it new, then you’ve got to make what you’ve already got work. Hence all the vintage American cars in Cuba. You’ll need a lot of that resolver mentality and ingenuity to overthrow Antón Castillo and free Yara in Far Cry 6®. You’ll need to scrounge gear where you can get it and hack together new weapons from whatever material you’ve got. How does a mini gun made out of an old motorbike engine sound? You’ll need to learn the resolver mentality from Juan, your guerilla teacher and a DIY King. You’ll also be able to gear Dani out however you like and get added bonuses depending on the kit you choose. Are you a stealthy sniper type, or front-line battering ram?

“Our people, they do not know how to be happy," dictator Antón Castillo tells his son, Diego, in one cut scene. “They are torn apart by opinions, noise, indecision – strangled by their own freedoms." In Far Cry 6®, you can prove Castillo wrong, and use those freedoms to reclaim Yara, and if you equip the Hamilton Khaki Field Titanium Automatic Far Cry 6® wrist gear, you can take less damage while you do it.

From screen to real world

Creating a piece of wrist gear that works both on screen and in real life doesn’t come without its challenges - particularly since this is a first of its kind project. But drawing on decades of experience and expertise from both the watch-making and video game industries made it work. “Designing a prop watch for the screen doesn’t always immediately translate to a real-world product,” says Stauffer. “We’ve created movie props before for movies like Interstellar and Tenet, but they were still made up of tangible parts. Ensuring the watch maintained a real and genuine look and feel as fully virtual gear was a new but very rewarding challenge for us.” Bouali added: “Despite the fact Hamilton and Ubisoft are coming from two completely different industries not accustomed to working together, we quickly developed a strong synergy. Creatively, we were speaking the same language. Hamilton’s experience working with filmmakers to develop a watch that truly both fits in and enhances the narrative is unmatched.”

The Devil's in the detail

Hamilton have spared no detail on the real life Hamilton Khaki Field Titanium Automatic Far Cry 6®. Surrounded by a brushed titanium case, the red second hands call back to the revolution red of the game’s colour palette, and the split on the six is in reference to the logo of Far Cry 6®.
